How Does a Septic System Work?
A septic system is usually made of two components: the tank and the drain field. The septic tank holds the waste long enough to allow solids to settle down, forming the sludge at the bottom, while the oil and grease, also known as scum, floats to the top. The liquids then flow into the drain field where gravel and soil naturally filter them and releases clean water into the ground.
How often should a septic tank be cleaned?
The answer depends on a number of factors such as the size of the tank, the number of individuals using it and, evidently, the average usage. For example, a 500 to 1000-gallon septic tank accommodating a family of four should be cleaned every 2 or 3 years.
It’s not recommended to schedule your septic tank cleaning during the wintertime, as the build-up of bacteria is essential to stop the content from freezing.
